Massage Therapy

The 120-hour Massage Therapy course prepares the student to be a proficient massage therapist (CMT). In this course, the student will learn to deliver a professional full-body massage (based on the principles of Russian Medical Massage), including deep tissue work. Each student will be taught the basic massage techniques, with particular emphasis placed on proper posture to prevent self-injury. The student also learns basic anatomy and physiology, professional ethics, hygiene, and about the mechanism, as well as the many benefits of massage therapy. Each student will also be educated on the counter-indications to massage (i.e., when not to perform massage). At the end of this course, a certificate is awarded, enabling the graduate to become licensed (in some cities) and practice either privately or at an establishment offering massage therapy services.

Physical Therapy Aide

Also know as Orthopedic Massage this specialized course teaches the student to utilize massage techniques, in combination with modern physical therapy techniques and equipment in treatment and rehabilitation. The student is taught the treatment principles of sports-related injuries and other back and limb disorders. Emphasis is placed on focal therapy (e.g., knee, shoulder, elbow), so that the average graduate will be able to face a multitude of injuries, and apply the techniques learned to successfully help treat a patient. Therapeutic exercise programs are also taught as part of this program. This program is designed to prepare the graduate to be a team member, working with physical therapists, chiropractors, and physicians, or in the hospital environment. This course is highly recommended for registered nurses and nurse assistants.

Chiropractic Assistant

Also know as Cranio-Sacral Therapy this is an advanced course that includes both the Massage Therapy and Physical Therapy Aide courses. The student is taught to treat musculoskeletal disorders associated with the cranio-sacral apparatus (head and vertebral column), including the shoulder system. Advanced therapeutic techniques are taught in this courses, including spinal mobilization, scapula manipulation and manual traction on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine. This course will prepare the graduate for work at a medical care facility (such as a chiropractic or physician's office).


Acupressure

The ancient art of acupressure dates back thousands of years. Originating in the Far East, this method of therapy is based on the concept of energy zone stimulation. The human body has various energy zones, each corresponding to various body functions. The acupressure therapist activates and balances these energy zones by applying stimulatory pressure to specific areas. This course teaches students to locate and release the hard-to-reach “energy blocks” in the body, with particular emphasis on the spinal region. The theory and basic concepts are thoroughly explained, and each student is taught the skills and techniques that make up the foundation of acupressure. This is a classroom course designed to achieve three goals: increase the student’s knowledge of the human body structure and function, prepare the student for the National Board Certification Exam, and help him or her accumulate hours necessary for various licensing jurisdictions, as well as the National Board. This course follows a systemic approach, where each body system is discussed and tied to the massage professional's already existent knowledge. This course is interactive and each student is encouraged to participate in discussions and ask questions. Computer technology and various visual aides and props are employed to make the learning experience more enjoyable and effective. Lecture slides are available to students on-line for at-home review. "Qi" (chi) is the life force and is the basis of Chinese medicine. Shiatsu, although developed in Japan, utilizes the Chinese medical model. Qi flows throughout the body in energy pathways known as "meridians." The pressure points are areas along these energy pathways where Qi has a tendency to stagnate. Stagnant Qi is like stagnant water, and is considered unhealthy. By stimulating the pressure points, the practitioner re-establishes the natural movement of Qi and health is restored. When one achieves an uninhibited movement of Qi, one has optimal health. In this course the practitioner will be introduced to pressure point release techniques, the Chinese medical model, and to the Law of the 5 elements.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders Treatment

As a group, TMJ disorders are very common, often causing pain (including neck pain), headaches, difficulty with chewing, and unpleasant popping sounds. These are sometimes difficult to treat without incorporating massage therapy and special TMJ exercises. This seminar is taught jointly with Dr. Yigal Prilutsky, who will introduce the normal TMJ structure and function, as well as the TMJ disease process development. He will also review various TMJ disorders, and discuss various diagnosis and treatment approaches. Following this introduction, each practitioner will learn how to effectively treat certain TMJ disorders with Medical Massage and exercises, including post-isometric relaxation. This training includes myofascial tissue release, trigger point stimulation on the TMJ, and exercises for relaxation and mobilization of the TMJ.

Thai Massage

Thai Massage is a unique method that includes massage, pressure point stimulation, and stretching techniques. Originating in India 2500 years ago, and perfected in Thailand, this therapeutic method has been practiced in Southeast Asia originally by Buddhist monks. It is both relaxing and energizing, and given its Indian origin, some techniques resemble passive Yoga exercises. The instructor, Michele Martin, has trained in Thailand, and has brought this unique method to the United States. Michele will introduce the participants to the history and concepts of Thai Massage. Each participant will then be taught basic treatment principles and techniques used in Thai Massage. The practitioner will learn to apply Thai Massage techniques on a regular massage table. This approach will enable the therapist to integrate Thai Massage techniques into any massage treatment.

The participants in this course will be introduced to the philosophy and approach of Medical Massage, as well as some of its basic principles. Advanced Abdominal Massage Techniques

Designed for the advanced practitioner, this course will provide the therapist with added skills in massaging the abdominal region. Following a brief overview of the abdominal region and digestive system structure and function, each participant will learn advanced massage techniques designed specifically for this region. The Chinese call this type of massage "forever young" because it helps remove toxic wastes from the digestive system. Advanced Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is an area of massage that is mastered by few therapists. Yet, it is an important area to be proficient in as a well-rounded practitioner. Given its many benefits, if administered competently and correctly, deep tissue massage can achieve a more effective treatment, with better results. In this course, the participants will be introduced to the mechanism of action of deep tissue massage, the rationale behind its use, and the important precautions and counter-indications to its use. Following this introduction, the participants will learn how to perform deep soft-tissue mobilization, elbow and knuckles techniques, fist petrossage techniques, and the principles of full-body deep tissue massage.

Utilization of Massage & Postisometrical Relaxation Techniques (Frozen Shoulder)

Designed for the advanced practitioner, this course offers additional skills in orthopedic massage, designed specifically for the treatment of "Frozen Shoulder." "Frozen shoulder" is in fact a group of inflammatory conditions affecting parts of the upper back and the shoulder areas. A potentially debilitating condition, it can be quickly and effectively treated using the orthopedic massage techniques taught in this seminar. The participants will also be shown how to apply the methods learned in related disorders like bursitis, tendonitis, and arthritis of the shoulder, as well as rotator-cuff pathologies. A special rehabilitative exercise for the stabilization of the shoulder joint is also taught as part of this course.
